HISTORY
As you approach President Buildings from the city centre, along Savile Steet East, you'll find an original 19th century gate and adjacent to that gate there's a plaque. Today, the gate is just a feature and the plaque, a brief insight into the huge industrial empire that used to be run from these premises. 150 years ago that gate was the main entrance of Atlas Works, the HQ of the John Brown lndustrial conglomerate. The original offices of Atlas Works now house units one to seven of the new office park, with its original first-floor timber walkway splendedly restored.
In 1899, John Brown and Company acquired the Clydebank Shipbuilding and Engineering Company. Ships built by the company included the Lusitania, HMS Hood, the Queen Mary and the QE2, its last major contract. We have been fortunate in obtaining three illustrations, extracts of which are published below. They depict the Atlas Works and it's expansion over a 46 year period from 1869 to 1915. Sadly, The artist is unknown.
REGENERATION
The 1st phase was opened in the late summer of 1998 and involved the refurbishment of the one remaining building from this historic site. This phase encompassed units No.1 to No.7. The bottom left image gives a view of that original building from within the new office park. Phase Two was completed in the autumn of 2000 and consisted of new buildings, providing units No.8 to No.29.
The park encompasses an assortment of unit sizes, ranging from 1181 sq ft up to
9500 sq ft.
